Rock Painting

Materials:

•

Rocks

•

Tempera or acrylic paint

•

Paintbrush

•

What to do:

1. Collect rocks in a variety of shapes and sizes. Have your child paint the rocks.

2. Have your child paint one side of a small leaf. Press the painted side onto a smooth rock. Repeat this process several times, using different leaves and colors if you like. When the paint is dry, use it as a paperweight.

Nature Bookmark
Materials:
  •   Pressed or dried flowers—follow the directions for the Flower Press activity to press fresh flowers, or use dried flowers instead.
  •   Child's blunt-tip safety scissors
  •   Envelope with a clear plastic window
  •   Construction paper
  •   Glue
  •   Washable markers or gel pens
  •   Hole punch and ribbon (optional)

 What to do:
   1.  Cut out the clear plastic window from the envelope. As you cut, leave a narrow paper border around the window.
   2.  Cut construction paper to the same size as the window you've cut from the envelope.
   3.  Arrange the flowers on the construction paper cut-out, then place the envelope window on top of the flowers.
   4.  Be sure the flowers show through the window.
   5.  Remove the window and glue the flowers onto the construction paper.
   6.  Squeeze glue on the paper border around the envelope window.
   7.  Place the envelope window over the top of the flowers and press it into place on the construction paper.
   8.  Have your child decorate the bookmark with washable markers or gel pens.
   9.  If you like, punch a hole at the top of the bookmark, loop ribbon through the hole, and tie it.
 Safety:
Adult participation needed for use of scissors and hole punch.

 What to do:
   1.  Mix glue with paint or food coloring, or use colored glue thinned with a little water.
   2.  Paint the glue onto one sheet of wax paper.
   3.  The paper should be well coated with glue.
   4.  Have your child stick colorful leaves onto the paper.
   5.  If you like, add other natural objects.
   6.  Sprinkle glitter over the leaves.
   7.  Paint glue onto the other sheet of wax paper, then place it on top of the first sheet.
